[OUR CHARITABLE IMPACT IN MARCH]
We were able to host 2 major charity projects this month: Cocoa-Bar-Hop: a street hot chocolate giveaway that took place on Friday, March 11th, from 10:30pm-1am. And UnderPants-Sunday: a church-wide fundraiser to be able to provide 300 brand-new pairs of Men’s and Women’s underwear to The Neighbour Centre.
This was the second time we ran a Cocoa-Bar-Hop since January, and this time we went bigger and better. We had more volunteers, and provided 200+ individual cups of hot cocoa to the bar line-ups. Each cup we gave out had a new message of hope, “stickered” to the side, that brought smiles to every club-goer who got a cup. We comforted people who maybe had a little too much to drink, brought smiles to the tired club bouncers, and turned angry drunks into happy comedians through our generosity.
We showed Love, one cup at a time.
UnderPants-Sunday? Yes, That wasn’t a typo. We had the pleasure of being able to get connected with The Neighbour Centre: a homeless help centre, where individuals living on the street can come, get a warm meal, take a shower, seek medical attention, or even wash their clothes in the centre’s many washing machines, completely free of charge. When we toured The Neighbour Centre, we saw all of this first-hand, and decided we had to get involved in any way that we could. We found out that they were in urgent need of brand-new Men’s and Women’s underwear, so we decided to meet that need. We decided to set the goal to donate 300 pairs of Men’s and Women’s underwear to the centre. It wasn't going to be an easy task, but after presenting the goal to our church community they were thrilled and ready up for the challenge. On Underpants Sunday, March 20th, we completed our goal and 300+ Men’s and Woman’s underwear were brought in, packed, and given to The Neighbour Centre.
We brought Hope, one underpant at a time.
We hosted 4 Community Events this month. We ran 2 separate community Whyte Avenue Meet-Up’s, a Meet-The-Pastors first-time guest event, and we hosted a huge Easter Sunday event.
Our Meet-Ups on Whyte Avenue, started at 7pm and took place on, March 16th & 30th. We squeezed way too many chairs around our small hipster cafe table — but God loves small hipster coffee shops — so God showed up, lives were changed forever, and acquaintances turned into friendships. Our Meet-The-Pastors event took place on March 31st, and was designed for our first-time guests, who maybe attended a Sunday Celebration or volunteered at one of our Charity events, to meet the people behind all the amazing things we do. It was a great night — again at a local hipster coffee shop — and again God showed up. Important questions were answered, vision was shared, and first-time guests turned into family.
Easter was our most anticipated Community Event in March. We wanted to do Easter differently. We wanted to be able to make a lasting impacted on peoples lives, and most of all, we wanted to be able to express the Gospel clearly, un-apologetically, to as many people as possible. We held a cocktail hour that started at 10:30am and continued after the service, where people could munch on wide range of beautifully prepared tapas, be refreshed with organic juices and fruity flavoured water. We prepared a special way to present the Gospel, with a powerful Gospel message, and a new musical Art Expression, along with a powerful reflection time during communion. With our Sunday attendance record broken, we were able to express the Gospel to many people for the very first time. People found God, reconciled with God, and saw God in a entire new way. It was a beautiful thing. But, it will never be about how people come to our events; our only goal as a church community is to be able to express the good news of the Gospel to as many people who have never heard the Gospel before. Our heart is for the hurting, depressed, confused, non-church people living in our neighbourhood, and that’s why we do what we do.
[ WEEKEND CELEBRATIONS ]
We held 4 weekend celebrations in the month of March. During those times we saw a 12% increase in overall attendance, with Easter Sunday being our biggest attended event ever. Our weekend event volunteers and teams grew by 50%, with new people being added to our Art Team, Culture Team, and Tech Team. Our pre-celebration briefing has moved from a small corner to now taking up most of the main hall. We are so thankful for everyone who helps our community host all of these amazing events, we would be so lost without them.
We do not pretend to be something we are not, and will not apologize for our scandalous love that we choose to show. We are a church family of Urban Outfitter style specialist, university students, business owners, property maintenance workers, ex-addicts, addicts-in-rehab, industrial foreman, ex-cons, nurses, Starbucks baristas, operating room attendants, waitresses, but together, we are family. Together, we are Studio.Church.
Now onward to bringing more charitable help to our neighbourhood, and onward to sharing the beauty of the Gospel to even more people in the month of April.
